The tower itself goes back to the mid sixteenth century, alternately briefly inhabited and abandoned for centuries, commemorated in stirring novels by Scotland’s writers. The tower has provided sanctuary to legendary figures from Scottish history and contemporary luminaries alike.  Around 1990, the parents of the present owners took up the daunting task of restoring the long neglected building, in the course of which the work won five architectural awards.
