General & History
Helen's Tower is a magnificent Scottish landmark standing at the shore's edge with views out across the North sea, in one of the most unspoilt parts of the UK. Approached by a kilometre long driveway, the castle is the ultimate retreat, offering what its owners believe to be unrivalled peace and seclusion. Guests are invited to stay at the castle on an exclusive use basis and the accommodation is versatile enough to cater for family groups, house parties and corporate gatherings.
The castle is thought to have been built in the late 15th century although it underwent renovations in the 17th and 18th centuries. Today the building maintains its imposing stature complete with three metre thick walls and a vast medieval vaulted hall. A mixture of the cosy and the grandiose, the castle and its estate cottages have corners to suit all tastes. Legend tells of a ghost who appears on the battlements periodically – it is said that she was abducted on her wedding night and locked in the tower, but rather than succumb to her captor's advances she leapt from the battlements to her death.
At its peak the lands attached to the property extended to over 500,000 acres, however maintenance costs over the years have steadily reduced the grounds to 3,000 acres in modern times . An iconic feature of the territory, this castle has been attacked and seized several times throughout its history, but apparently in each case the local chieftain or monarch forced the attackers to restore the castle to its rightful owners.
