General & History
The chateau itself is set in tranquil rural surroundings on two hectares of recreational land. The splendid accommodation sleeps 17/19. On site you have a private and heated swimming pool, terrace and tennis court.
The main house was built on the site of a mediaeval priory (1400's) but there was settlement by the Romans here before this. At least two Roman villas were built here in the early part of the first millennium and Roman coins were unearthed in the fields just last year. The “west wing” of the house which has most recently been restored was the original “Prieuré” and has a number of original features remaining including a very special hand-painted (and working) fireplace as well as the remains of the original monk’s stove (“potager”).
The original chapelle (which is not part of the property) can be seen from the gardens. The principal part of the house was built by the Fourneaux family in circa 1800 as a prestigious house (“maison bourgeoise”) and remained in the same family until 2001. The area is rich in European history from the mediaeval fortress town of Chinon with strong links to Richard the Lionheart and Jeanne d’Arc to the charming and unique town of Richelieu, built in the reign of Louis XIVth by the famous Cardinal.
