Castello Francigena Estate
Built on the historic road from Rome to France, dating from the early 13th century, as a carved inscription in the golden stone of the building attests, this magnificent castle was inhabited by a single wealthy and noble family for over 400 years, who made it the heart – in those bellicose times - of a tiny fortified village. It fell eventually into desuetude, beset with family machinations, and immediately after WW2 the father of the present owner took it in hand, restoring some of the buildings and demolishing those that were beyond rescue.
Now, the 50 hectares and 8 farmhouses have been brought up to date and are run as a vibrantly successful agriturismo where guests are welcomed as, and frequently become, friends of the family. The buildings to let atCastello Francigena amount to a little hamlet – with luxurious accommodation at La Case, the nexus of a cluster of traditional Tuscan farm buildings, also to let, with a more casual rustic ambience. The whole group is perched on a hilltop with stupendous views of cypress dotted verdant countryside.
