General & History
Justly classified as an historic monument and deliciously over the top - with helicopter landing pads and baronial thrones, crenellated battlements and views of russet tiled rooftops and craggy forested mountains, not to mention an ambitious wine cellar - Chateau Tortue is a fabulous backdrop for any stray ambition to be lord of the manor. In the 12th century it was a more rugged proposition - very likely it was boiling oil rather than fine wine, that was stockpiled. In the 16th century it underwent the conversion from rough military compound to something a little more civilised celebrating the pleasures of peace rather than warfare. Discerning aristocrats and royal relatives have made this spectacular fortress their home ever since and, while keeping many of the impressive remnants of history, the present owners have given the place a comfortable, contemporary air inviting total relaxation.
