General & History
A castle has graced this place for a millennium – the present day Chateau de la Grande Laraine, a stunning architectural gem, was built in the 18th century to the very exacting requirements of its owner – an advisor to Louis XV - on the ruins of its medieval predecessor. In the past its walls have echoed to elevated discussion among the politically influential and the grandly intellectual. It is now a byword for elegance, having been subject to a thorough and imaginative restoration at the hands of an internationally revered interior designer. The happy outcome marries the charm and grandeur of the original features adumbrated by museum quality furniture and paintings, with the relaxed luxury and comfort essential in hectic times.
The Chateau itself is characterised by outstanding architectural merit – it is dignified by a setting of equal grandeur, with a listed National Landmark in the form of a precisely clipped and manicured formal garden, set with fountains as a touch of romance. Beyond this there are 26 hectares of grounds, comprising meadow, woodland and lakes. There is also a heated 6 metre diameter round swimming pool, along with tables and chairs and a barbecue for al fresco dining. The entire estate is within walking distance of the local village, and walled for privacy.
