The countryside surrounding the château is full of hidden valleys and wooded hills; orchards, vineyards and walnut groves; fields of yellow sunflowers and blue with flax; spectacular chateaux and ancient castles - a testament to a fascinating and turbulent history. Now a region of peace and tranquillity, where the people are welcoming, and where the visitor will be overwhelmed by the quality of the cuisine found in the many cafes and restaurants. Sample the great variety of local produce from the foie gras to the excellent wines.
The local village has a charming, sleepy atmosphere but has a bar, a restaurant and an excellent boulangerie.
Souillac, a few minutes drive away, has many shops in its twisting old streets and much of cultural interest as well, including the exquisite carvings in the church of St Marie, with its byzantine dome, and a museum famous for its fascinating collection of automata. And jazz afficionados won’t want to miss July’s Jazz festival.
A visit to Sarlat’s bustling Saturday morning market in the main square is a must, enabling the curious to inspect the region’s produce as well as the renowned medieval stone arcades and the wealth of the town’s Gothic architecture.
Beynac, originally a haunt of troglodytes and still riddled with caves, is a remarkably picturesque medieval village on the banks of the Dordogne, dominated by an imposing castle.
There is also Bergerac, an important market town, particularly for the wine trade, and famous for the locally grown purple grapes. It has a museum devoted to the history of wine making and offers many vineyard tours.
Domme, a walled bastide town spectacularly situated far above the Dordogne river with views of the distant Auvergne, is well worth a visit.
