Situated in the the south of the Dordogne region on the borders of Périgord Noir (So-called because of its dense oak woodland) and Périgord purple (so-called because of its purple grapes), Château Merlin is situated close by one of the historic wonders of the region, the almost perfectly preserved bastide town of Monpazier, built by King Edward in the late 13th century.
As well as shopping opportunities, Monpazier holds numerous events during the summer months: a medieval fair, musical concerts, and a bicycle race.
There are open air markets selling local produce in virtually all the local towns and villages, as well as many excellent restaurants.
And of course there is the picturesque Dordogne valley a short drive away which offers a wealth of leisure pursuits such as rock climbing, canoeing, horse riding, tennis, golf and tours of the local vineyards.
