General & History
Chateau des Galants is a beautiful medieval country manor house dating from the 1300s. The pride of the local community, it has provided a comfortable country residence over the centuries, with glorious landscaped gardens, stylish interiors and even a Roman spa.
On the border of Brittany and the Loire, the house commands breathtaking views across the surrounding countryside and along the Vilaine River. Indeed its superb location made it of significant strategic importance during the Second World War. With considerable bravery and ingenuity, the owner of the manoir created a safe house for the Resistance and escaping allied forces, and the house became a symbol of defiance and hope for the local community during those dramatic times.
The turbulent history of this house seems hard to imagine as you stroll through the English-style country garden, designed in the 1980s, the creation of which was followed in a television program at the time. There are now thousands of rare and exotic plants, which have grown into perfect maturity, including hundreds of roses, a poplar woodland, an arboretum, herbaceous borders and formal lawns, streams and winding paths to get lost amongst. This is indeed one of the finest gardens in France, and the gardens are open to eager visitors on specific dates of the year.
The manoir has been carefully renovated to allow its medieval charm and beauty to shine, while creating comfortable living spaces, dressed in traditional French and English antique furnishings. Organized around the two main wings of the house, surrounded by a walled courtyard complete with watchtower.
There is a self-contained cottage within the gardens and seven en suite bedrooms, including a fabulous suite in the old tower. The manoir has a spacious conference facility, with modern communications set-up, and a heated spa pool and acres of gardens – making this the premium choice for hosting corporate getaways and holiday parties.
