Le Dorat has an important twelfth century church in the Romanesque style, the Collegiale de St. Pierre and a fortified gate unique to the Limousin region. It also has an outlet store for Limoges porcelain and a wide range of shops, bars, restaurants and superstores, and of course, a weekly market.
Montmorrillion is a medieval town specialising in all crafts associated with books and publishing. Its other main claim to fame is the discovery there of the clay mineral montmorillonite in 1847.
Limoges, a flourishing artistic centre situated in the heart of the Limousin, was originally founded by the Romans around 10 BC. The Gothic cathedral of St. Etienne, begun in 1273, was only completed in 1888. A porcelain industry was developed in the early 19th century and is now regarded as the porcelain capital of France. The painter Renoir was born in Limoges in 1841.
As well as having museums and many cultural attractions, Limoges is a thriving shopping centre with many famous names from the world of fashion.
