The River House is in a tiny Cotswolds hamlet hidden in the Evenlode Valley, an officially designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The area is known for its characteristic stone built cottages and country inns set amongst rolling fields and woodland threaded with meandering streams. There are numerous walks in the area and opportunities for course fishing, trout fly fishing, riding and other traditional country pursuits depending on the season and availability.
There are numerous famously beautiful villages in the vicinity including Great Tew with its thatched cottages, Bibury, The Slaughters, Minster Lovell with its romantic ruins, Bourton-on-the-Water and many others. Even the less known villages are picturesque and some have beautiful churches. Nearby country towns well worth a visit include Burford, Moreton-in-Marsh and Stow-on-the-Wold with their golden Cotswold stone buildings including handsome town houses, churches, inns and shops that were all built on the profits of the wool trade six hundred years ago when the area was booming. It was this wealth that enabled people in the area to build in stone, so the villages of the Cotswolds remain in tact today for all to enjoy.
This area is rich in historical sites, from the Bronze Age Rollright Stones and Roman Villa at Chedworth, to Blenheim Palace in Woodstock just outside Oxford – built for the first Duke of Marlborough in 1704 and the birthplace of Sir Winston Churchill. The great thing about The River House is that although it stands in totally unspoilt surroundings, it is nonetheless within half and hour of the world renowned city of Oxford and an hour away from the attractions of Stratford-Upon-Avon, Bath, Warwick, Gloucester and Cheltenham. In terms of local culture, the nearby Chipping Norton Theatre is of architectural interest and has a varied programme of performances from theatre to jazz to pantomime. There are many good restaurants and gourmet pubs in the area if guests want a change from self-catering and want to experience the wider Cotswold community.
