General & History
Originally built by the Archbishop (a native of the Ascain village) in 1575, the Manor House has been fully restored by the current owners. The Manor has preserved its original style with plenty of antique furniture and original features.
Next to the Manor, but independent, there is a Cottage House, which has also been refurnished in a traditional French style.
Manor of Sossiondo is situated on the border of the village of Ascain, at the foot of the famous “La Rhune” mountain, and overlooks the countryside and in the distance the Atlantic Ocean. The Manor is situated in acres of farm and woodlands with wonderful wild oak trees. There Manor boasts a variety of country style gardens where one can relax, have a BBQ and enjoy the views.
Ascain is a reputed, typical and charming Basque village in calm inland surroundings. Ascain is home to the famous “Ramunxcho” story written by Pierre Loti. Ascain's festivities and local sports attest to a rich and varied folklore and a strong cultural identity.
The Manor is located only 10 minutes from St Jean de Luz (TGV), 30 minutes from Biarritz Airport, and 40 minutes from Fontarrabie Airport and San Sebastian (Spain) by car. The TGV train to Bordeaux takes 2 hours and to Paris 5 hours 20'.
The Manor is available for groups up to 8 persons. (An additional room in the attic can be used for a “live-in maid” if necessary). The nearby self-contained cottage can host up to 4 guests, they are ideally rented together however we don't rent the cottage if the Manor is rented.
As the houses are also family homes, not just holiday lets, the furnishings & contents are conducive to “homes away from home” with all the comforts necessary for a comfortable holiday stay.
There are several excellent golf courses within 30 minutes of the Manor, 2 within a 10 minute drive.
