General & History
A stunning 17th century chateau in beautifully landscaped gardens. Very close to Honfleur (10 minutes) and Deauville (20 minutes) in Normandy. An ideal base to explore the landing beaches, the Bayeux Tapestry, and Monet's Garden. The chateau has beautiful formal rooms, and can sleep up to 16 people. There is also a heated swimming pool with a pool house that used to be the stable block. For larger groups of up to 26 there is a neighbouring farmhouse (to sleep 10) in the grounds that is available for hire in conjunction with the chateau. Daily maid service is included in the rental price of the chateau.
The chateau was originally built in the mid 16th Century and was enlarged in about 1720. Since then the exterior has been untouched, although the interior has been fully modernised. The chateau has had a colourful history, from being used as a safe house for aristocrats being smuggled out of France during the revolution (as it is so close to several ports), to being used by the Resistance during WW2. During the second world war the German military occupied the chateau for a short period but, at the time, there was no running water in the property so they did not stay long! By 1958 the chateau was very run down and was bought by a Parisian family and completely restored. This involved having to replace five of the eight main roof beams, and the conversion of the lower ground floor from cellars into what it is now. The gardens were also terraced and the Italian garden was created. Since the war, the chateau has settled down to a quiet and elegant existence, although it has hotsed guests such as the Aga Khan and the Dalai Lama.
