General & History
A medieval journey awaits you at the chateau - offering the conviviality of a private mansion. The beautiful setting makes the chateau ideal for an unforgettable historical stay. It has taken more than two decades for the current owners to restore the chateau to its past glory. They have done this with infinite care, hard work and dedication to the chateau’s pride and beauty.
Ancient building methods involving traditional masonry, stone carving and crafted carpentry combined with carefully chosen materials were employed to rediscover the chateau’s medieval heritage & atmosphere.
The traditional tables, grand fireplaces, four-poster beds and French style oak-beamed ceilings in every bedroom create a unique sense of grandeur.
Surrounding the main courtyard of the chateau are trimmed boxes, lavender and well-trimmed yews to complement the spirit of the place.
You will enjoy relaxing around the large heated pool which is fully mosaic tiled and elegantly concealed in a fenced park.
We can trace the chateau’s history back to the latest centuries of the Roman Empire. The usual historical tradition tells us that Childebert the first, son and heir to Clovis the Famous Merovingian King of the Franks, founded the estate in the year 524 AD and thereafter considerably expanded the region by building new market-towns and fiefs. Traces of this era can still be found in the chateau caves, the ancient kitchen & the underground passages.
Throughout the centuries successive lords rebuilt the chateau to their liking. Among them was Clotaire, the son of the Emperor of the Roman Holy Empire of Charlemagne. Around the turn of the 13th century, the dukes of Vendome, in order to further secure their boundaries, erected a seigniorial fortress.
Louis the 14th also owned the chateau 150 years before the governess of Napoleon’s only son.
There is a lot more to be discovered about the fifteen centuries of life at the chateau and the last remnants of the past have not yet surrendered all of their secrets.
